Top Cleric: Iran Constitution Bars US, Zionist Regime's HegemonyTEHRAN (Defapress) –In an address to Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran, Ayatollah Seyed Ahmad Khatami said the Constitution has stressed the need for relations with the world countries, but has also set conditions for it.

Article 52 of the Constitution stipulates that the Islamic Republic does not come under hegemony and does not seek the hegemony over others in its foreign policy, the cleric explained, saying this principle prevents any relations with the US and the fake Zionist regime.

“We won’t have relations with the US as long as it would not come to its senses, and it has not so far,” Ayatollah Khatami said.

Pointing to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s emphasis on foreign diplomacy and push for stronger ties with the eastern and western nations, the cleric said the Leader’s recent move to send a special envoy to Moscow had the message that Iran has contacts with the entire world.

In comments last week, Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized the necessity for diplomacy and enhanced foreign relations, saying, “Except for a few cases like the US, the country’s relations with the East and the West must be further strengthened and diplomacy’s operational and purposeful mobility should increase.”

It came after Ali Akbar Velayati, a former foreign minister and a special envoy of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, travelled to Russia to submit messages from Ayatollah Khamenei and also the Iranian president to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
